I've seen loads of caterpillars, and found some of them cocoon things they make, but no butterflies!

I need to get a book. I have no idea wot butterflies are wot butterflies... how many types are there here in the UK? Rogesse - re stagbeetles, yes, if you look at a map of where they are we live in a 'pocket' where they seem to be ok. The only time I've seen a flying one is when we lived over the road about five years ago. Honestly, it was massive it was flying really slowly and heavily - it could hardly carry its own weight, it was like a prehistoric monster aiming straight at my head... cor did I scream !! It landed on the ground and dh took it away whilst I ran indoors. The last one I saw was on my shed door last summer, big, but not as big as the previous one, and it wasn't flying - only the males fly and only in Autumn to find mates. OR SO THEY TELL US. I'll have to find the website where you are supposed to note them. And I'll look up butterflies at the same time - I do love butterflies. Missed the ones at Wisley though.

[QUOTE=FB.;408189]Yes.
Began seeing the yellowish "cabbage white" lookalikes a couple of weeks ago.
The yellowish butterflies you saw were almost certainly Brimstones as they are one of the earliest butterflies to emerge. We have had a few here over the past couple of weeks, also Peacocks and Small Tortoiseshell.Attached FilesLast edited by digthatchick; 22-03-2009, 09:36 PM.

Lovely insects
It' lovely to see the butterflies again. I've seen, small tortoiseshell, peacock, red admiral and a little brown job which wouldn't stay still long enough for me to i.d. it! Lots of ladybirds emerging from hibernation in the garden and some huge bumblebees buzzing around. I agree with the i.d of the Comma and Brimstone butterflies too. Brilliant. And as for Stag Beetles...WOW! I wish we had them here!! Cheers, Spiderling.I'd give up chocolate but I'm no quitter!

1 or 2 peacocks around here, sadly one of the cats got one on Saturday, it was rescued but in a bit of a tattered state.....
......just pruned all 6 of the budlejas (spelling??) so am hoping for bumper numbers later in the year.
Huge bumble bee flew past my nost yesterday too.
Brought the mason bees house out from its hibernating spot and replaced it in its bracket, only 7 tubes empty the rest are all plugged.The cats' valet.
