  • Orange Tip Butterflies

We seem to have lots of white butterflies with orange spot/tip on their wings.

Looked them up and think they are these Orange Tip - Anthocharis cardamines

Has anyone else seen these? are they common?

The orange-tip is wide spread, and where it has a good food source it can be a frequent visitor. It likes lady's smock. Only the males have the orange markings. Seen during spring and early summer I believe.
A good beginning is half the work.
Praise the young and they will make progress.

They seem to like it here. We have had several for the last 2 weeks.

They are quite abundant (sound less, well, common than 'common'!) I believe they also feed on Jack by the Hedge - aka garlic mustard)

Thanks F, when we moved in last July we could not believe the amount and different types of butterflies, so we have started to photograph them and look them up :-)

We have loads of them, it's one of the most um... abundant species in this area. I think I see more of them than Cabbage Whites. We rarely used to see Peacock butterflies but they seem to be becoming more abundant here too.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Yes - had some for last few weeks in SE London - and cabbage, and blue and peacocks.
                    Sunny site!

I was cautiously hoping I wasn't imagining that I was seeing a few more butterfies this year and have seen this "variety" three times so far this year, don't remember seeing them before.

We have had them here on Oxfordshire for the past few weeks, and the lovely little holly blues are about too!
