I hear them all year round, due to the fact that we have a 30 a week come live with us.... for a short time anyway..... my lizards do enjoy a cricket or 2!!!! also have locusts but they don't seem to make much noise!

Hi Veggielover. The locusts make a "crunch" sound when the lizard chomps 'em!!!!!
I'd give up chocolate but I'm no quitter!

Photos of a grasshopper and a cricket

Here you are Nicos - I knew I had these photos somewhere on my computer - I really must organise my hard disk!!

This is a picture of the common field grasshopper:

And this is a juvenile field cricket (gryllus campestris) which I found in the corridor of my home a few years ago. I mistakenly thought it was a cockroach, but when I showed the photo to the local pest control guy, he was able to reassure me it was just a cricket. If you find 2-3cm diameter holes in your lawn, it's probably an indication that they are alive and chirping in your garden.

Oh yuk!!! I thought crickets looked like grasshoppers looked like locusts!

..well I suppose they do a bit!!

Thanks for the ID Printemps- I'll go and have a quiet wander over to see when the grass finally dries up- it's knee deep at the moment!
            They do sound lovely
