  • Another grass snake

Was just out in the garden; pulled the big tarp off the 'in use' compost heap and off slid a rather large and probably disgruntled grass snake. I've seen them a couple of times in the pond since we've lived here, but this is my closest encounter with them. made me jump!
Unfortunately he/she retreated back into the compost, which has made it rather awkward as far as extracting compost is concerned, as I don't want to damage it, or it's family if it happens to be nesting in there.
It's now piddling with rain, so I have also retreated!

Ooooh lucky you, I've only ever seen one grass snake and promptly ran it over - it slithered out in front of me on the road, I was gutted but it was squished and gutted.......

If it was over a foot long it was a female and may have eggs in your compost, she will look after them till they hatch.Probably best to leave the heap alone for a few weeks, the temperature is maintained by the heap to aid in them hatching.
