  • First Fledgelings ... (blackbirds)

So, at last, my blackbirds have finally produced babies (2). I'd begun to think they were feeding a hippo, the amount of sultanas they were taking away.

Mum is still taking food back to the nest, so there are more to come.

These two are hiding out behind my pots

Aren't they cute with their almost-lack-of-tail! We had one panting in the heat and showing its huge yellow gape, right in the middle of the chickens' grass patch. I had to shoo him out before they went in there or I'm sure they'd have tried to eat him! Voracious creatures!

We have had a nest near an outhouse, been watching the wide mouths get bigger and bigger......they left the nest yesterday in all directions
Had to round the dogs up quick! One minute we were watching them being fed, next they had bombed out, they hardly look big enough to cope in the big wide world.

        Aah.

The Moorhens out the back have also had a baby - it won't come out into the middle of the canal and we nearly missed it as it paddled past us right under the decking....it was dead cute, jet black and fluffy...I was about 3 ft away when I spotted it.

No ducklings spotted yet, but the swans had their 2 cygnets a while back and they are already quite big. Very cute.

          piccies of babies!

Got a piccie of one of the babies. Then while I was inside getting the picture on here, the rather loud noise it keeps making to its mum got even louder...........so I had a look and it was in the conservatory!! Second picture a little blurred as I was in a panic!!

Awwwwwww sweet. We have a family of blackbirds, the youngsters seem to be leaving the nest at the rate of one a day (two so far). The parents keep an eye on the ones leaving home inbetween going back to the nest with food.

Meantime I keep a close eye on my old cat and an ear open for the adult birds making a fuss if she's getting too near the fledglings.

Yesterday the two parents were making an awful fuss and poor old Tiz was sat cowering with them hopping round her squawking and carrying on. She made a quick getaway into the house and stayed there for the rest of the day.
