  • Meet Tundra....

.....Can I introduce you all to Tundra?

She's a two year old Snowy Owl.

We've got her as a guest for a few days as she's just had surgery for bumblefoot (swellings in the feet that cause pain and stop birds from standing) this morning. In the daytime she will go to the falconry with DD, but she spends her nights here so that she can be watched.

She's watching tv in my livingroom....I've forgotten the tv, I'm watching Tundra!

No, she's watching a movie called 'The Triangle' It's a piece of junk, but Tundra, DD & OH are well into it. I lost the plot.

She's so lovely, you can even cuddle her, but we won't because her feet are sore and bandaged, and she needs to rest.

Beautiful! Is she going back to the wild when fit, or display, or captive breeding program, or what?
Owls are lovely, Snowies are on the shortlist for the most attractive.

When Tundra's better she'll be living at the falconry where the DD works. She was rescued from somewhere else, and DD's falconry got her when the RSPB phoned to ask if they wanted her (they take a lot of rescue birds)

DD thinks that she was well fed and, judging by her trust in humans, well cared for. The previous owners just didn't have much understanding of the sort of perches they need.

I think the falconry are hoping to breed - Tundra is almost breeding age now. The males are bigger and whiter like Hedwig in the Harry Potter movies - they used a male owl for the movies.

I didn't know this, but most owls don't hoot. Only Tawnies hoot, I think (DD will be ashamed if I've got the wrong one) Tundra has a very piercing shriek, but she makes all sorts of other noises too. Chirruping and almost purring noises.

Just amazing to have her in the livingroom, up close. I wanted to take more photos, but she was here to rest. I thought the flash would freak her, but they can't see it. I think I'm right in saying they see in Ultra Violet.
