  • I have a toad - and a question

Whilst clearing the rubbish at the back of the lottie before work today I moved a piece of soggy MDF and found a toad. (Chubby, rough skin, walked for cover - that is a toad, yes?) My sunken sink pondlet at the other end of the plot has wiggly tadpole things too!

Anyhoo, I'm now in a quandry. The rubbish - plastic bags, paint cans, open bags of cement, more MDF etc - has to be moved. How can I tidy up without disturbing my tenant? Don't want to frighten something that eats slimey things away from Snail Central. There are slugs the size of Guinea Pigs here...

Move him. He'll soon settle elsewhere. Himself's grandad used to look for a toad at the beginning of the growing season and re-locate it to his greenhouse. Reckoned it was second to none for pest control. Every day he used to say, "I think I'll just go and move me toad." He took it to a doffernet corner of the glasshouse. It always sounded like a dodgy euphemism to me!

How lovely- we cleared away our rubbish and made a rough log pile with a few logs and flat pieces of wood The odd small plant pot tucked in and flat stone and moss and grasses will encourage them in ( and hedge clippings etc)

Ah... For me it's a frog. Lives in the collection of pots under the staging. Plenty of water from the watering. And loads to eat.

Our toad lives under our wheelie bin and once a week when the bin goes out he's made homeless. Still insists on living there though.

Today my toad had moved into the woodmouse's nest which is under the metal sheet I put down for the slow worms, I don't know if the mouse minded having toady sitting on his head, but I scattered some bird seed down for mousy anyway!

I'm assuming this refers to the toad and not the guinea pig-sized slugs?!

Thanks for your replies. Problem solved. Went back this morning and Mr Toad crawled under an old bit of plank I was planning leave where it was (for wildlife purposes).

So I just arranged a few more bits of wood haphardly - but very carefully - on top of that one. Everybody happy. I hope...

Thanks Flum! Toads are obviously less sensitive than I thought.
