  • Sparrows

Came home this evening to find two little sparrows trapped in the greenhouse amongst the cucumbers. I had left the door open and they feed quite close to the greenhouse. Spent half an hour trying to show them the way out. Managed to set them free, sweet little birds. Threw out a few slugs as well for their supper

I'm glad you managed to free the Sparrows Herbie.
In my last garden I had none at all - although I had just about everything else - and I always wanted them. Now I have them in this garden I find they are just pesky little birds.
They rip the peas and sweet peas apart
They strip the buds from the crab apple, buddleja and prunus amanagawa
the cock bird CHIRP CHIRPs at very high volume day and night
In winter they go about in gangs and fight incessantly.
Sweet little birds they are not - but they are interesting to watch and I think I will just learn to put up with them. Maybe I'll come to love them.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I've got sparrows in my garden too, and agree with Alice about the noise. It's amusing to watch them on the bird feeders though - they spend more time arguing than eating, constantly shooing each other off and changing places.

They are noisy, but it's a noise I can zone out (unlike TV noise).
Our cock bird sits on the guttering outside the bedroom window and CHIRP CHIRP CHIRPs from sun-up

My friend has a leylandii hedge down one side of her garden. She calls it sparrow hotel. Very amusing to sit on the patio and watch all the little heads popping out - loads of them.

I sit on the swing and watch them on the feeder, great fun to watch. At one stage you could not see the feeder as it was covered in birds. They manage to strip the feeder of four fat balls in an hour! They seem to like lettuce and chard in my garden for some reason. They may make a noise but like TS says you zone out, I just enjoy watching them. When I was trying to nicely show they the way out they were hopping and jumping all over the place, impossible to catch so just refilled the feeder and left them to it for a bit, gone by the time I returned.
