Yes, it's an Emperor Moth caterpillar. Handsome chap!
When they are mature and ready to pupate they seem to go on a long walkabout to find somewhere suitable to get changed.
When I was a boy I found one walking along a path in North Wales, so I took it home in a jar and put the jar on my windowsill. It spun itself a brown silky cocoon and eventually next year, just when I was giving up hope, the adult moth emerged. It was a beauty. I let it go of course, but it was a good 25 miles away from where I picked it up. Hopefully there were others a bit nearer!

I am not a lover of moths but have just googled the adult moth of this caterpillar and it is beautiful. Nothing like the monster that came into the house last night. I love butterflies but moths are a no no for me.
This is the Emperor Moth. Emperor Moth Saturnia pavonia - UKMoths
So beautiful but rather intimidating with its big "eyes" and furry back. Don't think I've ever seen one - but I want to now
Seems to be Caterpillar walkabout time.
No photos, I'm sorry - he didn't want publicity - but I found a White Ermine moth caterpillar in the veggie bed. One of these :- White Ermine Spilosoma lubricipeda - UKMoths
I've seen the moths too - like flying dalmatians

The only kind of butterflies I ever see are cabbage whites and a brown and orange one that I don't know the name of. They're lovely all the same though.
