2 reasons Danny, some animals and birds are sensitive to the infra red that is used by the auto mechanism and scarper when you aim at them. Also when in dense cover the auto focuses on the first thing it sees, often thin branches, so manual is the way to go, nice to keep your hand in too. Fast moving objects are still taken in auto.
