  • Anyone Know This Fungus?

Sorry, no photo as I don't do digital, but does anyone recognise this description? I think it's a fungus and it looks rather like a white bread-roll, creamy-white with a golden brown top. Bread-roll sized too. It's growing where my chickens range so I'm a little worried that it might be poisonous and harm them.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Sounds like slime mould. I get it on my gate alot. It turns from white to dark brown and will be gone in a few days. Harmless I am told, just doesnt look very pleasant. You tend to get in lawns alot too.

It sounds to me like a "Penny Bun" and is not only edible but delicious. But, please, take wiser counsel than me before you eat it!

It could be an earthball from the genus Scleroderma. These are ball shaped rather than the more familiar umbrella form of mushroom. When sliced with a knife the inner flesh is inky black or dark brown. Unfortunately quite common but not edible.

Think I've found it on Vikki's link, it could be a Meadow Puffball which is 'edible, but bland' so at least no danger to the hens. Thanks all.
