  • My new Wildlife Pond, Progress so far......

I hope you dont mind me sharing with you pictures of my new wildlife pond, I've been faffing about with it for the last 3 days.

It's not finished yet as I still have some stones and logs with my name on them at work. I also have some native plants and seedlings to plant yet.

    It's about 2m X 2.5m
and foot and a half deep at its deepest, all I could manage.

1, The plot. 2, Hole 3, liner, 4, getting there, 5, stones, logs.. yet more to come.

    The Inspection.

    Then the Inspector turned up.

He likes it very much, and has already tried to step out on the water.

It looks great! Just one thing, where there are stones around the edge it would be quite hard for a hedgehog to climb out again if they fall in (which they have a tendency to do). They lean down like the Inspector in the last picture and tumble in. You really need something level with the water with a bit of a slopes so they can climb out easily and don't drown.

Its hard to tell from the pic because the water is dark, but there is an edge quite shallow, I also have some cobbles at work for me to pinch tomorrow, I will adapt these into the design as well.

That's looking good. It won't take long before it's blended in and the wildife appears. You'll have to put an updated picture after a season

Looks great - it makes me wish I'd made mine bigger now.

Love the edging, looks very natural - will grow into it nicely.

Looking good, mine had frogs, newts and dragon fly nymphs within the same year (guessing the latter were imported on the plants). Don't be complacent about the hogs though, mine too had a sloping beach (about 1.5m wide) but regretably at least 1 paid the price in the first 12 months. Don't go overboard with plants etc in year 1, I did and now in year 3 I have major removal problem on my hands.

              But. whatever happens. enjoy it!!!

It's too dark to take another pic at the moment, but there are more logs in/out of the water. I need to source a few native plants for the outside to help support the soil as the pond was made whilst it is very dry... I'm expecting a heavy shower will make a mess.
Ho and its attracted heaps of Hoverflies for some reason, but nowt else as yet. Cept the 'inspector'.

I was a bit distracted by the fluffy inspector too

Cobbles are a good idea, that's what we've used, we have a couple of sunken bricks (decorative kind not house) in a U shape that sit just level with the surface and filled them in with cobbles. The frogs love that bit to spawn in too and it's usually full of lots of little bugs.

It looks really good . I want one now. Wondering where I can fit one in at the lottie. Can't have one at home cos Jake the dog has a thing for frogs and hedgehogs. Wants to carry them about and bring them in the house, doesn't hurt them though but its a tad annoying for me and them.

That looks great. As has already been said, in no time at all it will have blended perfectly with the rest, and it will look like its always been there.
I have a pond, and have seen all manner of wildlife stuff on/in it.
Its my fave part of my garden and I can sit there for hours just watching nature, fantastic.

                        Well done- it looks great!
I keep thinking I'd like a pond again- we had loads of frogs in our small pond in the UK.- and the hedgehogs visited regularly!

                        Lovely Inspector too!!!!

I only have a tiny backyard of a garden and have the tiniest pond in the world.. it's about 3 feet by 2 feet and about 2 feet deep max, with a little waterfall. It may be small but it attracts frogs and all sorts of birds and insects. Definitely worth putting in a pond - no matter how big/small
