Fungus or fungi or something dodgy

I've been bulb planting today & we have a tree stump in the garden its an apple tree never did know which kind it was diseased and had to be cut down but i kept the stump, well it has a purple coloured fungussy stuff growing on it sort of all the way down the back of the stump growing out from it if that makes sense does anyone know if it posionous were not gonna eat it but was wondering cause my 9 year old helps out in the garden, thanks

Yea will do that tommorrow just realized how many there are been googling it all day its like a lilac colour and growing in shelves from tree i think the tree is dying too

It it's got fungus on it then the tree will almost certainly be dying. Will get OH to have a look at any photos as he's dead good at the identification lark.

OH says that he can't tell for sure what it is without looking it up a bit more but is pretty certain that it's in the not nice to eat but not poisonous category.

all fungi look pretty much the same to me, but have a gander at this site: Identification Guide to British and European Fungi

I'm getting better at identifying them as OH keeps pointing them out to me when we're out and about. When you get to recognise things you can quite rapidly build up a fair bit of knowledge although I still check them very carefully in the book before eating anything. Have loads of dried (mainly ceps) ones this year for use over the winter.

Thanks olive I think your spot on I've been out today and sawn the stump down I was going to leave it and put a bird table there but I think it's kinder to get rid of the remains of the tree altogether , I have a plum tree arriving this week to so it's probably a good thing I got it sorted as the article says plums are more succeptable to this and I dont want another dead tree

It's possible that this might be Witches' Butter (Exidia Glandulosa)
Fruit body 2 - 6 cm across, gelatinous, pendulous, disc-shaped at first and bearing tiny scattered warts. often becoming fused with adjacent fruit bodies, upper surface felty. Sporse white. Resembles hot cross buns when viewed from above. Habitat on dead wood of deciduous trees; sometimes on dead parts of living trees. Season: all year. Frequent. Not edible.
From the picture in my book the colour would seem to be right and, as someone else said, while it is unlikely to be poisonous, you would not want to eat it.
