  • field mice on plot.

We moved some plastic sheeting on the lottie today and disturbed two little field mice who had made a snuggly nest under there. They were so scared bless them.
Felt really bad that we had kicked them out of their nice warm and dry nest.
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. ~Author Unknown

This happened to us a few weeks ago and there were babies in the nest. They were tiny. The mother mouse made a nervous return to rescue the babies. It was fascinating to watch because she kept coming back to collect each baby - she picked the baby up with her mouth and carried it off to a new hiding place.

I don't get upset by field mice on the plot because I think it's their natural environment - the allotments are surrounded by open fields on three boundaries. The only damage I've had is a few nibbled strawberries which isn't really so bad.

They are so sweet - the last one I saw was brought in by the cat (can't fathom where he found it) but being an inefficient sort of hunter, he dropped it and it disappeared into the hollow fire fender. The secret was given away by the other cats crouching and watching the spot!. We had to disassemble the fender and shake mousie out, outside, where he vanished.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

We've got what I was told were mice on the plot ... actually they are voles (shorter noses, shorter tails) and are so very cute.
They are currently living under my pallet compost bin, and no harm to anybody

I've had one (or more) in my shed. Didn't mind too much, but they've now started removing the stuffing from the garden chairs.

I wouldn't mind them if they left my broad beans alone. They dug up every seed that I sowed in the Autumn and left a nice neat little hole where they'd been.
