  • Thats better - my girls

Saturday and a little more mild here in Oxon.
Went over to the plot at mid day and how happy it made me!!!!!
The sun was out and no howling bitter gale blowing, all was warm and still.
To my delight..... out they came Quite a few bees flying.....that's better - at last.
I did not see any bringing back pollen though, this is what I am waiting for most of all, it can mean all is well and the queen is starting to lay eggs, even so I must take care that they have enough food when this happens. It's easy for them to starve this time of year, lots of little bee mouths to feed and more often than not - awful weather and few flowers to forage from.
Just need more warm still moments like this please.
Still to cold to open the hive and go through them though.

That must really have felt magical. Hope we get lots more mild weather for your girls
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery

        That sounds better HF.

I've got Hellebores and snowdrops out now, but haven't seen any local bees in the garden yet.

Still not quite out of trouble yet folks- March and April can cause large scale starvation problems
I did pop over there this morning to take the mouse guards off....they are metal strips with bee sized holes drilled in them. They are put across the entrance to stop hungry mice getting in, trouble can be caused when the girls bring back pollen,
these mouse guards can scrape off the pollen as they climb through the holes - we need pollen, pollen is good
Just wish I could go over lunch time to see them (hopefully) busy!
              I need hive cam!!!

Good news Headfry. Fingers crossed for a few more warm days to wake up the pollen bearing flowers. I am starting to put sugar water out now - I saw a butterfly yesterday!
