Darkcrow, pond has been going for about eight years, and now you mention it nearest local water is about 6 miles away I just expected them to march here obviously
When I took over my plot I found a frog hiding in all the weeds and stuff. So a pond was the nearly the first thing I dug. Not sure if the pair I saw mating this year in my pond were the original frogs, or from frogspawn I added last year, via freecycle.
I had thought of adding some goldfish this year, as the pond is now established, but having now found out it's one or the other, then I'll stick with my frog pond.
However I may add a goldfish to each waterbutt, like TwoSheds.
It isn't necessarily either or. When I still lived with the 'rents we had a pond which had both fish and frogs. The pond was there about three years before the frogs found it and started breeding. I'm sure the fish did eat a lot but there was obviously plenty to survive cause they came back year after year and there were always loads of frogs about.
We also had a cat as did next door. Don't recall any frog murdering although he did used to perch close to the edge and have a go. Not saying they can't cause problems and if you're trying to encourage frogs, probably be best not to have loads of fish.
We have a pond, fish and cats as for frogs......dare not leave the back door open sometimes as they come in the house!!!! we had frog spawn and tadpoles, newts some years too. Make sure there is plenty of cover in you pond and at the edges... areas of floating plants help as it gives tadpoles somewhere to get away from the fish etc. Dragonfly larva will also eat young fish, tadpoles etc!!! the adult dragonflies are beautiful though. Its about balance really. I think by now you are a little late for frog spawn, spend this year getting the pond frog friendly.... boggy areas are good as are very shallow areas of water, again the tadpoles can swim here but not the fish!!
good luck and keep us posted....
THank you all for your advice I will work something out and have a seperate froggy area away from the fish, cos they will do as they are told and stay there wont they
We've big fish, half the neighbourhoods cats and the occasional heron and still have loads of frogs! They like to have a shallow area to lay eggs, you can make one with a pond basket half filled with pebbles. They also like to be able to get in/out the pond so a slope or shallower area if there is a big drop between the ground and the water. Cover when they are out of the pond, pile of pebbles/broken flower pots etc. areas that are damp.
