You do need to know what species you're dealing with,in Scotland we don't have many muntjac so the fencing is the high wire variety. You do need to make the fencing visible as birds have a nasty habit of flying into it. Capercaillie suffer round here, some are threading high vis tape through it.
You could try natural hedging like quickthorn and rosa rugosa.

Sorry that it's a blurred photo, but this is the type that we have.

This particular deer isn't very healthy, as it walks with a limp and the top of its head looks to be quite raw.

        It is a bit blurry,I think it's a muntjac,dog sized?
They are more likely to go under a fence rather than over it so I'm told by friends in the shooting fraternity and can get through quite small gaps too.

Sadly the photo was taken through glass on a rainy day. It was actually quite a good size when standing up, and possibly too big for a Muntjac.
We have several species in this area, and I'm edging towards Roe?
