what is this?

I came downstairs this morning and very nearly tripped over this on the kitchen floor. I know it looks like a grasshopper but it doesn't jump much and it has a stingy thing at the end. I bought a large potted plant yesterday and wonder if it arrived in that.

Looks like a cricket to me Brengirl - in shock at being out and about during the day as it is usually a nocturnal creature.

Well whatever it is I released it into a bush in the garden. Do hope it doesn't keep me awake tonight singing thankyou.

My guess would be that it's a Great Green Bush Cricket - they can be locally common in the South at this time of year and I've seen one or two in our garden in the past.

Well, whatever it is, we get loads of 'em round here.

I used to spend hours trying to catch them, when I was a kid.
