I noticed the amount of Garden Spiders last week on holiday as they were all strung from plants across to the caravans.

I try not to look at them too closely as I really don't like them at all. However, it does seem they're not interested in coming inside thankfully and are quite content sitting in their webs.

The fungus link was very interesting - reminds me of a nature program on a while back about the decaying process of a Rainforest. They have really bizzare fungi that create amazing 'sculptures' from their hosts.

where do the spiders go in winter?

In our loft. Under the floorboards. Into cracks in walls , under the roof of my beehives..

Judging by the size of some in our house: legs a full 10cms apart, they must have been here for a century or more, breeding extra large GM spiders....

Very true, but the picture is of a spider covered in fungus. Didn't you think it was pretty nasty! Made me itch

I thought the 'spider lovers' might like to see these photos of 2 I saw having a bit of 'fisticuffs' in the garden the other week, they both wanted to hang their web from the same spot but eventually one retreated.

We've had plenty of Orb Web (I think that's what they're called) in and around the garden. They're usually spun at about face height in various places - Bean's swing, climbing frame, greenhouse door and so on.

We have a real fatty on our front door - and he's been there weeks. I've caught my hair on it several times but it's so strong it's stayed put. He's (or she) fattening up for the winter I reckon.

The hanging baskets at the back of the house were covered in webs the other week and looked spectacular in the frosty/dewy mornings. I did take some photos, but haven't uploaded them yet.

I'd rather have spiders than flies any day.

We had a biggun in the bedroom a couple of weeks ago, http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...red_52282.html
but I think he met his demise at the hands of a rather spindly specimen who was a little more cunning and adept at web building (it looked like Big Fred caught in Mr Spindles web).

RIP Big Fred if it was you.

It is a tenet we have lived by. They are lovely, do no harm, catch flies. Can't be all bad.

I love the garden spiders and their webs, even if they are in the most inconvenient places. Big Fred was evicted from the bathroom a week or so ago, but either he or his twin was back yesterday morning. Evicted again.

Lots of the stripy legged ones outside - blocking my way to the garden - but I wish I had a few more spiders inside - due to loads of fruit flies and house flies!

*sends big box full* .... i went into the kitchen the other day, and there must have been 20 fruit flies trying to get to the melon inside my fridge .... they must have a hell of a sense of smell.
