  • The Christmas Bird - A Moorhen

Being keen bird watchers we put lots of food out for the birds all year and this winter we have tried our best to help them out. The rewards have been plenty of the usual garden birds plus one or two visits from uncommon birds.. But... On Christmas day morning was had moorhen stutting about, taking whatever seeds were on the ground. (S)He spent all day in ours and the next doors gardens.
We see them all the time down at the ponds at Beauchief Abbey ponds, about 10 mins walk away, but never before has one been in our garden.

He was not here Boxing day when we got up

    Love Moorhens.

We have them in our garden all the time, mainly because it backs onto a canal. Often we hear a loud cheep on the way down and it's their version of 'SCARPER' and see them all running and jumping back into the water.

In spring, the adults swim up the middle of the canal, and the babies stick to the sides. They aren't daft! So if you see an adult swimming around, check the sides to see if there is a little baby swimming along....dead cute and tiny.
