Heron in garden

I peered out through the patio doors yesterday and saw a heron staring at me through the glass of the conservatory. Quite a surprise as we regularly see them on the estuary but never had one in the garden before. Perhaps it was looking for frogs or slugs to eat??

I was going to say the same - they are usually after fish - have any neighbours got any?

I saw one out the back, sat on top of the garages a few weeks ago: someone must have a pond over there

We had one last year which posed for photos on the garage opposite. It had cleaned out the fish from just about every pond in the village - some decent sized koi too. We just have wildlife ponds in our garden - I supose frogs are fairly well down the wish list if you can get goldfish!

We often get one,we do have a pond on the edge of the patio,they are a blinkin nuisance,and have a big wing span,had net up last year,draped on canes,looked ugly but gave some protection to the fish,there are lots of herons not far from us, on the watermead country park,

No fish in any of the neighbour's gardens. Contrary to popular belief herons are opportunistic feeders and will often take small mammals and large insects. I've even heard of them eating rats and rabbits.
