Its a green woodpecker

They mostly eat ants

This particular one more appropriately named 'grasspecker'. Possibly making a meal of some migrating ants.

They also take leatherjackets too, the two that come to me vie with the starlings every autumn to clean the lawn. They also love my ancient apple trees and spend hours going up and down the trunk.

hope this chap is a regular visitor. So nice to see.

Used to have a great spotted woodpecker at our old place - a very handsome bird, with a jaunty 'swooping' flight.

edit: will have to think about leaving the 'zoom' lens on my camera
