  • Waxwing in the garden today! Yay!

    Hello Grapes!
Just had to report my fab sighting this afternoon - I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a waxwing on my cotoneaster! I had planted lots of berry bearing shrubs for the birds and had only attracted blackbirds and thrushes so far. I had been hoping for fieldfares and redwings but a waxwing tops the lot!
    Hurrah!
(I live in N Lancs about equidistant from the moorland at Clougha Pike and Saltmarsh and mud flats of Morecambe Bay so potentially could see quite a few things pass through.)
    Wonder what I'll see next??

I saw my first waxwings this year as well. We have had overwintering flocks hanging around supermarket car parks (lots of shrubbery and trees with berries) since the cold spell in JDecember. I am also looking forward to see what turns up soon as we enter the spring migration period.

we got a flock of Waxwings in the trees at the bottom of the garden just as the first snows arrived in December then they vanished. We then had another flock about 3 weeks ago followed by another cold snap and snow.
I have called em Snow Birds.Hope i'm wrong..

Ah- now I understand why I've never seen one- they migrate from Scandinavia to overwinter in Eastern Scotland and England...and only just get as far as Cheshire in a cold year ( where I lived).

We spoke to our friends who live in Northern Sweden this weekend and they've been having -40C and have 7ft of snow...it's no wonder those bids fly over here!!

We get them in Guernsey some years, depends on how bad a winter it is. Several around this winter.
