  • Young Sparrows

When in the garden this morning I noticed that some of my runner bean canes that had been tied into a cross member were hanging loose.
On having a good furtle around I found the short lengths of green garden twine on the ground with very frayed ends.
Now I know I am not that bad at tying knots so I refastened the canes and carried on with my work whilst at the same time keeping an eye on my canes from a distance.

Next thing is a small flock of fledgling sparrows picking at the ends of the string, each one then flew off with its booty in its beak. I have never witnessed this behavior before and wonder what they can want the string for.

The canes are now fastened in with electricians plastic ties.

They have been pecking and taking my fleece too. As Maccabee says they are after nesting material.

That would seem the sensible answer but I am pretty sure they are fledglings and is it not a little late in the year for nesting?

As you can guess I know very little about sparrows.
