I was super-impressed with this kit Live Butterfly Garden

We bought ours with those Tesco vouchers for schools, and today released four live butterflies from the 5 caterpillars that we received: YouTube - ‪school butterflies‬‏

The children were fascinated with their lifecycle over the last 3 weeks, asked lots of intelligent questions about them, and now have respect & admiration for these little creatures

We did this a few years ago - great isn't it. Did you have Painted Ladies? We use the kit now to hatch interesting chrysalises we find in the garden (we do release them straight away upon hatching)...generally they turn out to be something nasty looking!

Well, I'm growing plenty of cwbs! Or should I say, they're favouring my crops

But is a great idea.. I didn't know they ate fruit.. I thought they just had tongues and fed on nectar.

Chris, if there's one near you, I'd really recommend visiting a butterfly garden or a tropical butterfly house; they're wonderful places. At a tropical one, we saw butterflies that were completely transparent apart from some electric blue stripes!

Yes, it's getting a wash out today then I'll be trying to find some nettle caterpillars (Red Admirals hopefully)

They suck the fruit juice up. I'd also injected the fruit with a sugary water solution for extra ooomph

We went to the one at the Natural History Museum ... the kids were bored but I could've sat in there all day

They really are great places to visit. It broadens the mind to nature, and her wonderful way of working

This looks really good. Would make a good present for my niece who loves everything pink and butterflies.

One question. Are they British Native Butterflies or does it not matter?

                  edit

Apparently they migrate here from Africa anyway, so i suppose it doesn't matter.

Do these kits contain butterflies specific to a particular geographic area or are they butterflies that can thrive across most of the UK.

It says in the links TEB: they're Painted Ladies (they fly here from Africa).

Our caterpillars have just started to turn into chrysallis overnight. We should get four out of our five caterpillars as for some reason, although still lively, one caterpillar has hardly grown at all since we got them.

My boys have absolutely loved watching the caterpillars get bigger before our eyes and I don't know who is more excited about them transforming in to butterflies! Me or them!!!
