  • National Nest Box Week

Just like us humans, our little featherd friends at this time of year turn their thoughts to........................

So, appropriately on St Valentine's Day National Nest Box Week begins.

I keep box's, pouch's, up all year round, what dont get used for nesting they use for roosting in.
Also any that dont get used i see Sparrows pulling apart and using for nesting material in the
    breeding season.

Put a new nest box up last week. Nestled into the ivy growing up our walnut tree. Not time yet but hopefully, in a good few weeks the birds will be checking it out with a view to moving in.
It is the doom of man, that they forget.

We've got a couple of boxes and up to yet we've only had robins nesting in the outside tap box.

I'm thinking of moving all my unused ones around, I seem to have them all in the wrong places.....
......either that or the cats keep giving potential occupiers duff information about the neighbourhood!

I have several nest boxes up for different birds - though I would like to make some for the swallows that come, the shed that they usually nest in has had windows put in it! Has any one seen DIY plans for boxes for swallows?

I don't think swallows use boxes, they are not hole-nesting birds. They generally make an open nest on a beam or rafter in a barn or similar open building.

Have a look at the Link on my original post, there you will find a list of birds the the BTO say will use boxes, swallows, sadly not among them

Scarlet, an open door or accidentally broken window seems to be in order?

Swallows will not use boxes for nesting.
They use a opennest made from mud reinforced from plant material, and attached to beams or anything else they can find.
