  • Dove or pigeon?

'Flower' has adopted us. she appeared in October, has no leg ring, coos softly and is quite tame. She roosts in the call duck house at night and shares their grain in the day. Is she a pigeon or a dove? She is smaller than a trafalgar square type pigeon for example.

It's a pigeon, probably somebody's pet racing pigeon.

If she's a racer, she may have the name and address of the owner ink stamped on one of her wings. If you can handle her, spread each wing gently to have a look. If she's valuable (good breeding lines) they will want her back, if she's not then as she didn't return home they're not so likely to want her back.

I know, I feel the same, especially about the wood pigeons, but this tiny thing is so friendly and pretty.

Not only will they not want the bird back, they will wring its neck if it is sent back. Guy with the plot above me had racing pigeons and his parents weren't married. That is exactly what he did with any bird that didn't come back of its own volition. He packed up in November thank goodness

Is that a problem then, parents not being married??? Bit random I think

it could just be a posh pigeon

my daughter regularly wrings pigeons necks, it was a problem people talked about about when we told them we'd had out of marriage relations - i thought it was an urban myth but sadly not

I thought that and then realised it is probably a polite way of calling someone a bar steward.
