  • Desperate for frog or toad spawn for new pond

I created a new pond last July and it looks good for frogs/toads .

I am desperate to get started and am keen to get some spawn. Anybody got some overflow? I live in Loughto Essex and will collect from anywhere in the county or east London.

It's not advised to collect spawn from elsewhere as this may spread invasive plants and disease.

My pond is 18 months old and I'm desperate for some spawn too, but as Capsid said, it's now not advisable to move spawn around as there's some nasty frog diseases going round. The frogs will turn up if the conditions are right

... and sometimes even if they're not! Yesterday I rescued a particularly dim frog that was hopping around the car park, and another that had jumped into one of my Morrison buckets (nobody has a pond on our lotty site).

Frogs only need a pond at spawning time, otherwise they live on land, sheltering under stones, piles of wood and in long grass. Make sure you have lovely shady damp areas they can live

Hi Chris and welcome. We got our pond finished this time last year and slowly filled it with plants etc during the summer. And yesterday we counted 10 large frogs croaking and having a lot of fun in the water. But no frog spawn yet.

We have another smaller pond (we've gone a bit pond crazy!) which we've had about 4 years and we always get frogspawn in the 3rd week of March - really weird but it's there like clockwork. I would give it another few weeks.

We've had spawn in buckets of water before - one of the reasons why we built our ponds.
