  • Blue Tits.

    The birds VC the birds.

Last year I had a nest of blue tits in my cavity wall, they had managed to gain access through a tiny hole near the window frame.

I let them fledge and then sealed up the hole to prevent further invasions. SWMBO horrified instructed me to make a bird box and place it close to where the original hole was. On Friday a pair started to check out the new accomodation and it looks like they have taken up residence.

As if, Potty, in this cold weather too....
I love it when the birds choose to live with you (me that is). The blue tits here have been checking out the nest boxes and there was a robin with a beak full of grassy stuff going behind the shed today.
Its the closest I'll even get to being a parent!!
I hope you'll all be very happy together - you'll have a nest box camera next!!

VC & BB until I joined this site I would never have dreamed I would be doing things like this. So maybe some good has come out of it after all.

        Good innit

          Nice.

You might need something like this to make sure they stay safe?

            Yes, it is good, innit!!
One year a robin made a nest in an open bag of compost in the greenhouse - stoopid thing! I couldn't go in there for a week or so until it decided it wasn't a suitable home to bring up his children!
Already this year there have been robins in the kitchen, the shed and the greenhouse. I'm afraid to leave a door open - but I like it really!!

SBP one of my friends is a twitcher and he gave me loads of help size of hole etc. He has been and had a look and says because of the position only larger birds would have been a problem. However the timber he recommended should be strong enough to ward of an attack by even the most determined corvid. He also had me make the box deep enough so that their beaks could not reach the chicks which meant an internal step up ready for fledging.

^ that's really important stuff Colin. The habitat (box) has to be suitable. Lots of people buy off-the-peg (unsuitable) bird boxes and they just never get used by the birds

I've got a robin and a blackbird trying to claim the camellia by the front door: poor little robin is simply outgunned by the ferocity of the blackie
