Over the last couple of days i have discovered quite a few frogs appearing, most of them seem to be a large frog on the bottom with a smaller one on its back....are they doing what i think they are doing???

I have a concern that there is no pond close and all the gardens are fenced in (ive only just moved into this rented property), what is worse, to leave them to it and hope they survive or relocate them to a large marshy area down the road???? i have a large dog and two cats which have already discovered the frogs and im worried they may become play things or my dog may stand on them.

    Any advice is appreciated

Sounds to me like they are making babies!

Problem is that there may have been a pond in the bottom of your garden which has recently been filled in and they have come back to their birth place- and unfortunately will continue to do so for several more years.
Might be worth asking your neighbours if they know anyone with a pond- but in the mean time leave out dishes of water they can spawn in - which you can then relocate.
Frogspawn - and espesh toadspawn is a very precious thing- please don't let it go to waste!!!!

Any chance of making a makeshift pond for them? Even a washing up bowl or dustbin lid sunk into the ground would do. Preferably where the pets can't get at them while they do the business.

        Hi Nicos,

I thought thats what they were upto....

The previous tenants filled in a huge pond (without the permission of the landlord), and im absolutely gutted, ive managed to put out a small tray with some water but its not suffcient but its all i can muster at the moment, ive also made some frog houses made with damaged pots. Nicos do you know how long they mate for before they seek out water???

          Hi Rustylady,

I need to do something asap for them, at my old house i built a pond using an old recylcling box but my landlord was very very easy going, i dont think this one is so easy going so it will have to be something temporary, i like the idea of letting them get down to buisness then moving the frogspawn (off Nicos).

A friend of mine was told by the letting agent that she had to fill in their garden pond before they could rent it out cos of health and safety but I think that was because they felt that people with kids were scared of pond danger - it's amazing I survived visiting my grandparents, what with them having a pond and all that!

Re frogs in general, noticed loads of tadpoles in our lottie pond this weekend, never noticed the spawn phase at all this year.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I always thought they did it mostly in the water. My mom had them 'at it' on her lawn once next to her filled in pond.
Boy did she feel guilty about filling it in...year after year!

Sorry, no idea about the delay between mating and laying- sort of thought the daddy fertilized the eggs as they came out.
It's been a long time since I've had the 'pleasure' of watching frogs 'at it'

blue- this is going to keep happening- so perhaps you need to muster your Plan A and Plan B asap!!

If you do put out bowls- pop something in them so the frogs can climb out again!
