  • Name that shrub.

Technically it may not be a shrub, but whilst out walking my partner and I often see/smell it, and neither of us know what it is.

It's a tree/bush/shrub, lots of small white flowers and smells really strong at the moment.

    Any ideas?

Could be either that, or Blackthorn (same thing?).

Smells very strong, and given the description regarding being prolific after a spell of bad weather, it would make sense.

The blackthorn (sloe) here has finished flowering now - hawthorn (or May) is in full flower now.
Hawthorn is also in leaf - fresh bright green leaves. Edible too!!

They look very similar, how would you tell the difference?

Blackthorn = smooth edged leaves and the flowers tend to grow out of the sides of the branches
Hawthorn = leaf edges are indented, like oak leaves and the flowers are in clusters
                    Both plants are spiny!
