So he's not an elephant hawkmoth like I thought then ........he was very friendly . He climbed onto my finger and I moved him to a place of safety in the shade.

Fabulous Moth. Talking of phone cameras can anyone identify this flower. There are loads of them on the overgrown lottie next to mine. Sorry it's a bit blured.

I don't think so. They are tall...over 3ft, and the stems look similar to carnation stems.

                  Is it salsify?

I agree with VC - looks like salsify to me!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

What can you do with it?

Its self seeded so try digging up a few and find the long thin roots - its also called vegetable oyster and you can boil & eat it like any other root veg. Lovely flowers too

Yep. Found a HFW recipe. Unfortunately it's on a neighbouring plot but if they continue the non cultivation of it I might try and save some of the seeds.

It'll soon blow onto your plot, DK. The heads go fluffy like dandelions.

So I understand, but I don't want it popping up everywhere...just in certain places.
