  • Pond snails

Now the water has cleared from the lottie pond,i see a lot of tiny black snails, pea size, now, there ar no fish in at present, the only place i can think of then getting there are,i had some pond weed given me from a well established pond, and must have had eggs on them, are these only babies,my questions are

1....are they likely to grow much bigger,
2....are they a threat to any veggitation,in or out the pond,
    3....are they fast breeders,
    4....would fish killem off,

i understand they are good in ponds as they eat any algie, the water was green prior to the weed going in,now... the home pond is green, and thought i would bring some weed home to this pond, with fish in ,hence my questions,as i do not wish to breed the unnesessary, what are your experences please, the home pond is going to be re sited in a few weeks,so want to know whats what before we refill ext, thanks peeps

In my experience (not having had a pond for a few years now), yes, they are fast breeders, and yes fish eat 'em.

I believe they can also arrive in the pond via birds ....

I don't remember them decimating the pond plants, but we didn't have anything that we would have really minded losing.
If the river hasn't reached the top of your step, DON'T PANIC!

thankyou PNK,i maybe put a few fish in the the lottie pond,i will also bring a clump of weed back for the home pond,my reasoning being,if i can get the water clearer before the empty out, then a lot of the cleaner water can be saved to put back in,

If they are the "round" type rather than the "pointed" type they are good, and who wants to put fish in a wildlife pond anyway?
        The cats' valet.

having fish in there normally reduces the amount of wildlife you will get in the pond
