Found this little chap wandering around on the steps this morning. His antenna were all of a-twitch, feeling the ground around and ahead of him. He stopped momentarily when I put my finger near him but then went on his merry way. According to this Common Black Ground Beetle - he eats slugs Must be very very tiny slugs!

I thought they ate slug eggs, not slugs (a bit chewy for an ickle beetle perhaps).
You've reminded me of a humungous beetle I found at How Hill. I expected it to be something quite exotic, but it was just another "ground" beetle
(there's nothing for scale, but it was as long as my thumb. I just wasn't going to get my thumb that close, in case I lost it)
