So a few sloped bits and a step or a few steps most of the way around?

        Good idea!!

I found a website for it, I'll dig it next week and do nothing with it then until I see how much water it holds naturally without me adding any. I'll not buy plants or anything yet.

What will you do with all the soil you remove? You could make a nice grassy telly tubby feature

Which is what I did, it has settled considerably over the years, is now only half the feature it was before

The soil I remove is going to be used around the pond to level the area and raise it slightly. It's a very messy corner. I need to make some sort of area to dump the grass cuttings too.

I've had the garden hose running in the pond now for about 9 hours altogether and the water is over a foot deep so it's comong along nicely. Another few hours should have it as full as it's going to get.

I made it a little smaller than I had intended, it's kind of kidney shaped and 9m or 10m by about 5m at its biggest points.

I left a few sloped areas, I'll be doing more when the soil I turned up dries out a bit. I'm going to gravel some of it and I'll start looking about plants for it in a few weeks when I make sure it's actually holding the water I'm putting into it.

I have the logs to dot around it and let rot too but again, I can't do any of that until it starts to dry out down there. I had a 6 tonne digger doing it and the area was so wet that it ripped up half the garden, hopefully the drainage will sort that out along with the new hedge I'm planting near it and I'll get some hayseed to spread on the upturned soil.

Take some pictures please Darwin, and post them on here. I'm dying to see your pond.

Why are you dumping grass cuttings? I thought you were going to use them to mulch around your hedge?

Well, somewhere to leave them to rot down a bit. I'll use some as mulch but I have to mow an acre of ground so that would be a bit too much mulch.

The pictures would just show a very badly ripped up grden with a hole and some muddy water so far, I'll be sticking up photos when it settles a bit.

Here we go, I had to resize it to get it to upload. Now it's very very rough, the garden needs to be levelled more when it dries out so the near side wont be as high. I need to slope the sides more in places too. Just picture it with grass around it and some nice pond plants dotted about. Maybe a few dragon flies buzzing about too.

It's not filled with water yet either, the level should be a lot higher when I'm done.

Well it's had over 12 hours with the garden hose in it plus I added some water from the stream and rain barrels (only about 100 litres before I had to go study) and it's quite full now, it's hard to tell exactly but I'd imagine over 2 foot at the deep end and a foot or more at the shallow end. It'll take about another foot and that's as full as it'll get.

Your pond looks great, I can't wait to see it when the grass has grown and dragon flies are flitting about!
