Propagating/Splitting a Fern?

In my garden, I have a huge fern - I have no idea of the species, except it looks frondy like bracken - and it used to be in my Nan & step-grandfather's garden. For that reason, my Ma would like to propagate the fern. Neither of us are willing to risk damaging or killing the fern.

Does anyone know if we can split it, or should it be propagated from the under-leaf spores?

I've split them before .........also found mine has propogated itself round the garden .....

Bins, I wish this one would. When my step-grandfather went into a home we took the two huge ferns from his garden. We lost one that Winter to the snow, despite wrapping it in fleece and sacking. This one has gone from strength to strength, but has never propagated itself.

At present, this one is all flat leaves, but you can see the new crown with it's green curly caterpillars of new leaves.
