  • Pond life in a bucket

    Morning all

We are putting in a pond at the moment but had to remove a waterfilled heavy iron bath first and that meant emptying it. We've had dragonflies breeding in it for a couple of years although they usually fail later on as the bath and water gets too hot. I have rescued all the larvae I could find so now have a standard black bucket with 70 plus dragonflie larvae in it. And a newt.

I know they are all carnivourous so what can I do to keep them alive? The new pond is unlikely to be ready for a week at the earliest?

The bath again is an option except that it is now in full sun and likely to get very very hot as we are due to get sunshine this week (happy dance).

    Any words of wisdom?

It's not the best time to be doing this, at the height of the breeding season.

    But, it's done now.

Leave them in the bath, but shade the bath. Erect a tent or something

Maybe a bit of minced meat in the water?

I was told to do this when I had loads of tadpoles one year- it's supposed to give them an alternative source of meat as opposed to eating each other!

They are all back in the bath. No idea how a newt got into a free standing roll edged bath!
