Wildlife area on the site

Hi everyone,

As a committee we are considering installing a wildlife area in the communal part of our site. This would most likely include a wildlife pond.

It would be about half way down a gently sloping field. Do we just need to dig a hole, line it (edge lining with rocks etc), and fill it with water, then let the run off do the rest?

We are considering fencing it in some fashion so that children can't wander into it.

Any advice would be welcomed.

The first onsite meeting about this project is tomorrow!

You don't want anyone nearby to use Roundup: it's harmful to tadpoles

Bit late to this but - sloping sides, deepest bit around 2feet to allow overwintering don't overplant (natives preferably) but do include oxygenators and 1/3rd surface cover. Don't be tempted to import wildlife, it will make its own way there.

after you have lined it, fill it first before you go putting rocks and stuff round the edge, then trim the lining.
the water will settle it down more than you can imagine.

and make sure there are ways out for anything that accidentally falls in.

You could get some heavy duty square wire mesh, and lay it flat over the water.
