  • Bird caught in fruit cage

It has been really annoying me the sloppy way a lot of people fling netting about on our allotment site, with no thought about the wildlife that can get caught up in it. Today I had to rescue a pigeon from a fruit cage on my neighbour's allotment, which had holes big enough for it to enter, but that it could not find again to get out. I know a lot of people will say "it's only a pigeon", but it's still wildlife. There is netting just laying about on the ground everywhere, and when people put it up they often don't bother making it taut, so birds can easily get caught up in it.
Sorry about ranting on, just had to get it off my chest!

    It is a problem.
I was devastated when a sparrow died in my own loose netting a few years ago ~ now I make sure it's tight & taut

Last year a fledgling blackbird drowned in my water butt So now those all have lids on, held down with large stones

I found a wren in my fruit cage last week. I think it must have squeezed through the tiny gap above the door. Soon flew out when I opened the door and I hope he would have found his way out had I not been there.
