A hedgehog house anyone?

Hi there,
My daughter has got a wildlife book and it gives a vague description on how to build a hedgehog house.
Basically its a cardboard box with a plastic liner in it with wood around it.
My daughter would really like to build one but have told her we need a better one than that. Am not prepared to pay nearly £30+ at a garden centre for a wooden box.
So I was wondering if I got a large pile of chopped wood and stacked it so it made a house type thing would this be suitable and what else could I use? Also what else could I use or put on it so others things like bugs could benefit from it?

Take a sturdy crate and turn it upside down. Cover it with stones, earth and wood, and make sure there’s an entrance.

In the corner of our garden we've stacked a load of branches and twigs. I put some old gypsophilia on top of it as it had turned straw like. This has had frogs under it. No hedgehogs yet, but I'm not sure if they can get under the fence gap! It cost nothing but a trip to the woods to pick up a few bits that had fallen off trees

Our gardens surrounded my 5ft brick walls but we still get hedgehogs now and then.

I have been thinking about having a hedgehog house on my plot but was wondering if there was anyway of attracting them. I have seen the odd one in my street but never seen one on my alotment. So apart from kidnaping the next one I seeds does anyone have any suggestions?

British Hedgehog Preservation Society have a leaflet on building your own Hedgehog home here.

Also Epping Forest Hedgehog rescue have useful information on building your own Hedgehog home and also feeding stations here.

Once you've gathered enough info you could even design your own for a specific space in your garden.
