Guess what it is? Plant or insect?

When I was in the veg patch I uncovered these things and I really have no idea what they are. They are 1.5cm x0.5cm wide- ish, I did squish one and some little white disk things popped out with some clear jelly. Any ideas anyone?

Just G**gled it and it does defo look like earth ball fungus (scleroderma) ....... interesting looking stuff - almost looks like something extraterrestrial
