Yin-Yang pond

I'm intending making a 6 foot diameter Yin-Yang pond on my allotment plot.



The intention is that one half will taper from water level to one foot (300mm) deep and the other half will be three foot (900mm) deep.

Not being a pond officianado I just wondered whether this sounded about right for a wildlife only pond? I intend to dig this out and line it with a couple of inches of sand followed by a cheap pond liner of some description. The shallow end may be tapered to allow any wildlife that fall in by accident, to get out.

With the spoil I am going to create a curved seat set close to the pond, planted with Camomile and possibly thyme

3' sounds a bit shallow to me as think that'll freeze through in winter. Do like the idea of shallower sections though, mine is shelved with a bit of a slope in one side but is definitely deeper in the middle - you have to allow for some silting up too over time.

Personally, for a wildlife pond I would do it 1ft & 2ft. Mark out the 6ft diam, dig it all out 1ft deep, mark out your curve then dig out the 2nd 1ft. Assuming you are lining it, I would then cover the 1ft shelf with white gravel to enhance the effect............sounds good Snadge..........My pond is 2ft deep max & only get ice on the top quater inch...........put a couple of tennis balls in & it will stop it from freezing.

I like it,my dads pond is completely shallow at the front with pebbles like a beach edging-you can slide in if you stand on them but just don't stand on them,then it gradually gets deeper,it's a large pond there's no fish but moorhens nest amongst the reeds & the plants,so many plants to hide amongst. If you put a pond shelf along the back (deep end) you'll have extra space for plants.

Will it be divided with earth or a wall or something to separate the shallow pond from the deep one?

Just earth. Why, can you forsee a problem?

The earth in that area is very compacted and full of tree roots. My worry is that the tree roots try to enter pond, but as its a wildlife pond only, this shouldn't make too much of a difference.

As an aside, has anyone on here made a camomile seat. Thinking that only top will be camomile with possibly wooden or brick/stone sides with thyme set into gaps in stonework

I made a camomile path once, well partially camomile and partially thyme. The thyme thrived much better so it's all that now.

No, I was just curious how you would see the yin/yang division if it was built as BM described, as one continous pool with a deep side and a shallow side.

My thoughts on a chamomile seat - how much do you like the scent of chamomile? Because once you've sat on it, your rear will be "scented" all day.....

You would see the division as only the 1ft deep shelf would be covered in white gravel. The 2ft would only have water in so would be black.............or vice versa.

I'd do it vice versa, as the white gravel may drift from shallow to deep, but not from deep to shallow

I've made a Camomile path once as a little "Guvvy Job" once asked to do a few years back, gorgeous to walk on in bare feet, my only downside thought of a seat would be that it could only be used in dry weather!
