  • Red Spider ...* warning...photos!

I was clearing out a small area in the garden yesterday and came across a Red Spider. Didn't have a camera with me, so no photograph.
The spider was slightly smaller than a standard Garden spider but somehow looked more vicious.
Never seen one before in more years than I care to remember, so I looked it up.
A woodlice spider, one of the few spiders with fangs strong enough to pierce a woody's carapace, they run them down then zap 'em.
    Amazing!
Obviously it was left to carry on doing whatever it wants to do in my garden, as most things are.
Also came across approx 20 Centipedes in an area of 10 foot square, one of those was the biggest I have ever seen.
The garden really is an amazing place, especially at this time of the year.
Feed the soil, not the plants.

If it was easily visible it was probably a Red Velvet Mite. They're pretty especially when you see a few together

Red Velvet Mite - Trombidium sp.

Trust me, this wasn't a Red Velvet Mite.

I am glad I am not on its menu.
Nature never ceases to amaze me with something.

Nice to know that's what they are. I never stay around them but have never been freaked enough to kill them. I am always impressed with the ones that make the tunnel webs as well. Unfortunately any that step foot indoors get it

Impressive looking spider, that, fishpond. If you're interested in BIG cockroaches, look up scolopendra...

Bleugh! Hate them, but you know me I can't kill anything so if I see one in the house it's usually OH or son who have to catch them and chuck them outside. Last one bit OH! If I'm alone I use the glass and card trick but even that takes me ages as I have to pluck up the courage to slide the card under the glass while the blooming thing is running around in it or worse jumping up and down like a demented I don't know what...spider?
The other thing I hate are daddy long legs...eugh! Again they have to be gently caught and put outside...I get a good laugh watching the antics of the hunter!

                      As far as I know
Nobody in the UK has ever been killed by a spider.

^^^^just had a bit of a goooogle and it appears not.
But...what with peeps travelling abroad and imported fruit etc, you never know what might crawl into a case/container and end up over here....
I've just been looking at some of the native spiders and couldn't recognise most of them....I doubt...unless it was a huuuuge big hairy thing, I'd even consider that any spider I saw in the uk to be anything but harmless
Maybe those peeps who run around flapping their arms might actually have the right idea after all?

I like spiders and I'd love to find a woodlouse cracker one
Could we start a VSP - Virtual Spider Parcel - on the web? Maybe Jay would like to send hers to someone in exchange for some other creepy crawlie
Sorry, Jay, not making fun (much) - I don't like maggots
