  • Urine for compost

How often should you give the compost a urine feed? I've never done this but heard that it's good for the compost.

Currently my compost are mostly kitchen waste (in a plastic compost bin with lid) and I tend to have a separate compost area (bricked up) for grass cuttings. I notice grass cuttings take much shorter to break down, is there anything I can do make the kitchen waste break down faster to be used quickly as garden compost. I do use Garota now and then.

hi there, i do mine over a day about once a month, more often if i remember, but now adding chicken poo so i dont imagine ill have to do it much longer ! you can usually tell over a few weeks if its going a bit slow. your compost will need it more in the colder months. happy composting! pats

Put all your wee on it. Saves on water (not flushing) too. There are other threads on the Grapevine on this subject, have a little search around.

Pet poo helps too, especially from veggie pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs and birds! I wouldn't use cat or dog poo - it stinks and can contain all sorts of nasties, such as toxicara. Putting wee on the compost is obviously much easier for the male members of the Vine as they can do it direct (as long as no-one is looking). I use a bucket inside my shed and empty that onto the compost heap before I leave the lottie.

Thanks for all the replies. Obviously feeding human urine everyday doesn't hurt. Mind you it's the cheapest/easiest way to nourish your compost even if you can't get hold of herbivorous animal manure.

Think I've mentioned this before, buy one of my friends gets her little boy (infant school age) to wee into a plastic bottle and pour it on the compost heap. He thinks it's totally normal but it confused his teacher when he tried doing it in a pop bottle at school - she was called in to discuss his development.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

It won't smell too bad if you can empty it frequently, and wash well after disposing of contents. The worst thing is getting the stuff into a bottle in first place without splashing... prob. best to pee into a measuring jug and then decant into a bottle?

When I was on Chemo, I had to carry 24 hrs of urine in a huge 5 litre jobby on the bus every other weekend. So I'm no longer embarrassed about wee ...

I was putting wee in the compost quite frequently (waste not want not) but after a while all my lovely worms started to disappear, then i read somewhere not to put too much wee cause the worms don't like to much acidity or something.
I do the same as looyate now, a days worth about once a month or so.

I was always told to do it just once and when you came to dig out the heap, keep a tiny bit of it back to cover the new heap and this will activate the new compost. But by the sounds of it the whole vine is continually exposing themselves on a monthly basis on their plots - did make me laugh - yes, I know we use bottles but the image did make me laugh.
                          Best wishes

                              urine containers

I find the empty 5 litre containers with screw on lids that are left over( by blokes into body building mainly)from nutrient and whey powder ideal they are black and big enought o pee in direct or add to w?o spilling.
Also they r discrreet easy to tuck down side of waste pipe.
