Which compost bin is best ?

I have a leaflet from www.wasteawarescotland.org.uk offering varous sizes of bin, ie. the Ecomax 220 ( 220 litre) or Ecomax 330 ( 330 litre)
The 220 would be fine for me but someone said they don't generate enough heat.
Any recommendations ?

I have several Daleks from the local wasterecycling site. They're black recycled plastic with lids and very cheap, but I still get the best results from my home made compost heap made with my ex's wardrobe (square bin, wooden sides, top covered with old carpet)

You will always want more room, have 2 if you can, then you can turn 1 into the other, thus it will rot down faster.

A good tip is to site it where you can pull it up over your bin up over the heap to get at it. Those little hatches are really quite useless. :-)

I am fanatical about composting. I collect compost materials from my OH's house and bicycle it 8 miles to my allotment ... also composting used kitchen roll, newspaper shreddings, hair clippings, toenail clippings (parrot can't eat them ALL) ...

I bet i have more bins than you..! I have 4.

3 council ones, 2 of which are Darleks, 1 is like a small phone box.
And a big wooden slatted one with a plastic cover lid fron B&Q few years ago.



Ho and they are in the garden, I dont have an allotment. (yet).

I've got three bins, one is the Ecomax 330 and two are open bins covered with carpet. None of them generate much heat but so long as you can wait, it doesn't make any difference in the long run. It's the difference between a 'hot heap' and a 'cold heap' - the Irish Peatlands Conservation Council have loads of tips on composting here.

Get the big one. Put it in the sun and it will work wonders. every now and then stick the fork in it and give it a stur. Then water it in hot weather.

Not showing off but I have 2 330, 4 220. I iron one made out of an air raid shelter. 3 made out of pallets, But I still have to buy compost.

I chuck everything in a heap in the corner of the allotment! When I can't see over the top of it I start another one in another corner and start spreading the stuff from the first corner on the beds. Good job I haven't got a ROUND allotment!
