  • compost bin trouble

i have 2 dalek type compost bins. 1 has nearly ready compost in it the other has fresh waste in it. i have just had something burrowing under the the later and they are starting to make a real mess and are actually in the compost burrowing. i put down chicken wire before i started to fill with waste. does anyone have any ideas on how to stop the blasted things. dont know if its mice or the dreaded rats. i do have mice under my shed.

    please help

As long as your chicken wire is fine mesh it shouldn't be rats. I've had mice trying to nest in the drier material at the top of one of my bins this year. Acutally I quite like them! Short of nailing a cat to the lid I can't make any suggestions. There used to be a product called 'Scram' or 'Shift' or something, which was supposed to deter them. I don't know if it's still available.

Every time you go past the dalek, bang it a few times with a big stick, whatevers inside will soon decide it's not a very good place after all!

Keep turning, they won't like being disturbed. If you look out for poo you might be able to identify the culpret!
