  • Best use of an old bookcase?

Ok peeps, so you know that I'm right up there with Aunty Flum in the Tightwad stakes, so I am rather loathe to jus' chuck take the rickety old bookcase to the tip.

It is about 6' by 4' and I've taken the back off and the shelves out so I'm left with a 'through the square window' affair.

I was rubbing my hands at the thought of my 'ready made raised bed' when I realised that the bookcase is made of chipboard which I'm guessing will be no good as it will disintigrate pretty quickly?

So would you bother using it as a raised bed, for something else or taking it to the tip...?

PS and DON'T say keep it for all of your gardening books as that will only encourage me - I've managed to talk myself out of that!

Do you have a shed Hazel? If you do you could use the book shelves to store seed trays, plant pots, packets of seeds & other small gardening items.

The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years.

They won't stand up to weather if they're chipboard Hazel. Our old allotment had chipboard doors around the compost heap and the things just went to bits in the wet. BW's idea is good. Storage. Welcome to the Tightwad Club!

You have to pass a test! Actually it's re-cycling and making the most of things so I suppose all grapes are automatically members.

You could take the shelves out, cut holes in them and create those photo frames that have about 4 photos in them - if you see what I mean?

Like this kinda thing: CREAM BEACH HUT MULTI APERTURE PHOTOGRAPH FRAME

How about for stacking seedtrays ( with seedlings) on a spare windowsill?
It would make the room dark, but if you have a spare(ish) bedroom then it wouldn't matter so much.
At least it would keep all the rest of the house seedtray free! ( well probably not for long if you're anything like me!)

Round here you would use it to decorate your back garden, along with a rotting TV, disabled freezer and several split binliners ...

Go and get the freezer, lay it on it's back and you'll have a great place to grow carrots.

He he, no, I remember watching The Big Dig (the programme that got me thinking about getting meself a plot), and one of the dudes/ettes on there had an old bath which they gre carrots in. It keeps the carrots up higher than the carrot fly....... erm.......fly apparently.

I just thought, fridge/bath, same kinda shape...

Ooh - have you been spying on my garden Two Sheds - when we started digging the area I want to eventually become a veg garden (some done rest not) we found the remains of a whole kitchen!! including 2 double drainer stainless steel sinks! Digging out the carcasses of the kitchen units is worse than clearing the nettles and brambles - can I grow in the remains of the chipboard or is that not a good idea?
