  • How do you turn yours?

I've got two daleks and both could do with turning as they don't seem to have done anything since the summer and one's looking a bit soggy so.....

I bought one of those compost tool thingys but I haven't got the strength to get it down through the compost (what a weakling I am!) so does anyone have any bright ideas on how to turn them?!?!?

    Thanks in advance

Personally, I just lifted the dalek up leaving the compost on the ground, then shovelled it back in. Now I've made a couple of the pallet type bins so just lift it from one to the other.

I guess if you don't want to make a mess (I had the luxury of mine being on the plot), it's going to be tricky to turn it.

I do the same as Wayne coz my dalek is on the veg plot. Just move the dalek along and shovel it all back in - obviously the top stuff ends up on the bottom.

I think one of the reasons for turning (after the initial mixing as you add to the compost) is to get oxygen into the heap. I've got steel pipe (50cm x 3.5cm) that I (or OH) will drill holes in to. I'm then going to put this in to the centre of my compost bin to act like a chimney and get oxygen into the centre of the heap. Hopefully this will speed up the composting and reduce the need for further turning. This is all theory at the moment I post on here if it works.

        Kind regards

I have had a lot of wastage this year, especially salad type veg that wouldn't store, that my compost heap grew to a ridiculous size. It's not so much that I grew too much, just that no-one could have predicted the summer we had and hardly anyone bought salad veg - not really salad weather - hope this summer is better !

                      Gis a job????

I gave my daleks away and built pallet jobbies, three in a row which makes for easy turning. When I had the dalek, as others have said, it was lifted off and repositioned and then refilled.
