  • Compost Calamity

    Hi Guys!

I am very new to gardening and need some help with my compost heap. We know that we should put all of our Kitchen scraps in but last year we filled it mostly with grass clippings (in our ignorance). Now we have a sludgey mess. What can we do with this? Can it be saved? Or should we find some way to dispose of it?

    Answers on a postcard!

    Thanks

Hello and welcome to the vine.

You could help your sludgy mess out by emptying the bin and re-siting it. Then put some shredded paper or straw or shavings (with or without manure) into the bottom of the bin and alternating this with the grassy mess. Layer up till all the stuff is back in the bin - the paper/straw/shavings will soak up some of the wet and should help get it back in balance. You may have to do this a couple of times till it gets sorted out.
    Happy Gardening,
    Shirley

      Hi JB,

Have you got access to any old carboard or shredded paper? if you dig out the sludgey stuff and layer it up with more 'browns' like paper/twigs/dead leaves you might be able to rescue it. Need more air in the mix.

Hi Jelliebabe, welcome to the Vine. Your compost can be rescued but it will involve a bit of hard work. Dig out the heap and remake it, mixing what you have with shredded newspaper, cardboard, straw, shrub prunings (cut small) or whatever is available. Provided you can loosen it up it should start to work again and rot down fairly quickly as the weather warms up.

Loads of people have this problem - too much "green" (veg and grass) not enough "brown" (shredded newspaper, straw).
I now wrap my kitchen scraps into newspaper parcels (like a chip wrapping) before putting it in dalek.
Here's a good link about making compost, from before:
