We've been using peat-free composts ever since we got our most recent lottie three years ago and during that time I've tried many different brands. I liked the Humax one, but the only garden centre where I knew I could get it has now closed down. I've tried the big DIY stores' own brands and haven't been too impressed. Does anyone know of a good make that is widely available?

There's been a recommendation on here which I've gone for, and that's to use New Horizon Peat Free Compost - it seems to be widely available. My local GC sells it for £4 to £5 a 60l bag.
Seems fine to me. -
That's what I use too Hazel, much the best stuff I've found and was recommended on some trials done by Which.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Thanks, Hazel and Alison. The name sounds familiar and I think it must be that I've seen it on sale at the nursery where I buy most of my fruit bushes and canes, so I think I may just find I 'need' to make a trip there at the weekend......bag of compost and just a quick look round the fruit section.

Just been and checked ours in the garage - New Horizons multi-purpose peat free, 70l was £4 from our GC. Thought it looked better quality, better composted, than in years previous.

I thought I saw something on a thread about B&Q doing peat free compost but just been to my local branch and they don't know anything about it. Sack fulls of sphagnum peat compost which they claim is environmentally friendly because "it's blended" with composted green stuff.

And this from a company which swore they were going completely peat-free. They did do their own brand version a year or two back, but it was frankly rubbish so probably didn't sell. Likewise Homebase, although I think you can still buy theirs, it's awful stuff.Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.Comment
